Nickel-plated copper strip and nickel alloy copper strip

Both nickel-plated copper strips and nickel alloy copper strips have anti-corrosion effects. There are some differences between them in composition, performance and application:

Ⅰ.Composition:

1.Nickel-plated copper strip: copper is used as the base material, and a layer of nickel is plated on the surface. The base copper material can be brass, copper, phosphor copper, etc. The nickel layer is usually attached to the surface of the copper strip by electroplating or chemical plating. The nickel content is relatively small, mainly forming a thin coating on the surface of the copper strip. 1

2.Nickel alloy copper strip: mainly composed of two elements, copper and nickel, and the nickel content is relatively high. Generally, it forms an alloy with copper within a certain proportion range. In addition, other elements such as tin, manganese, aluminum, etc. may be added according to specific performance requirements.

Ⅱ.Performance:

1. Mechanical properties:

1) Nickel-plated copper strip: The nickel layer can improve the hardness and strength of the copper strip, but due to the thin nickel layer, the improvement of the overall mechanical properties is relatively limited. However, it still maintains the good ductility of copper and is suitable for some occasions that require certain strength and formability.

2) Nickel alloy copper strip: Due to the addition of nickel and the effect of alloying, it usually has higher strength and hardness, can withstand greater mechanical stress, and is suitable for application scenarios with high requirements for material mechanical properties, such as manufacturing high-strength parts.

2. Corrosion resistance:

1) Nickel-plated copper strip: The nickel layer can improve the corrosion resistance of the copper strip to a certain extent, especially in some harsh environments, such as humid environments with certain corrosive gases. The nickel layer can protect the copper matrix and prevent the copper strip from being corroded. However, if there are pores or defects in the nickel plating layer, its corrosion resistance may be affected.

2) Nickel alloy copper strip: Nickel itself has good corrosion resistance. After forming an alloy with copper, its corrosion resistance is further improved, and it can be used in more harsh corrosive environments, such as chemical industry, marine engineering and other fields7.

3. Conductive properties:

1) Nickel-plated copper strip: Copper is an excellent conductive material. Although the conductivity of nickel is not as good as copper after nickel plating, the nickel layer is relatively thin, which has a relatively small impact on the overall conductive properties. It still has good conductivity and is suitable for electronic and electrical fields that require conductive properties.

2) Nickel alloy copper strip: As the nickel content increases, the conductivity of the alloy will gradually decrease, but in some occasions where the requirements for conductivity are not particularly high and the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties are high, nickel alloy copper strip still has application value.

Ⅲ.Application:

1.Nickel-plated copper strip: Widely used in electronic connectors, tensioning frames, relay shrapnel and switch contacts. Because these application scenarios require materials to have good conductivity, certain mechanical strength and good corrosion resistance, nickel-plated copper strip can meet these requirements.

2. Nickel alloy copper strip: Due to its excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, it is often used to manufacture parts with high material performance requirements, such as automotive engine parts, ship parts, chemical equipment parts, aerospace parts, etc.
